The Nanotechnology Systems Diploma Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - the first such diploma in Canada - will provide graduates with a knowledge of the many disciplines with emphasis on electronics, biochemistry and material science, and the skills to operate systems and equipment associated with Canada's emerging nanotechnology industry. Students will gain lab experience and learn clean room protocols in sessions at partner instititutions located at the University of Alberta and the Edmonton Research Park. Students will work with equipment and systems used by manufacturing companies and researchers alike. An example of the equipment is an SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), used to obtain images of objects at the nanometre scale. Graduates will be familiar with lithography, a technique used to make micro-chips (integrated circuits) and MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems). Students will experience application of biochemistry that leads to the “lab on a chip” technology (where medical tests may be carried out on a hand-held device the size of a phone).
